A New Rhythm
I host a church small group in my home once a week, and this most recent gathering, I was in the spotlight, to give my testimony. Unfortunately, I’d gotten no sleep the night before *classic insomniac here* and was finding it difficult, in my groggy condition, to condense five decades of walking with Christ and my fellow believers on this pilgrim journey. That thought, Pilgrim Journey, gave me an idea.
About a decade ago, and for six or seven years, I blogged regularly—several times a month—about my life, relationships, parenting, God—all with an emphasis on my worldview as a believing (although not very traditional) Christian. I pulled out a few of those old blogs, like this post, and read them to my small group. And it was good.
It was good to remember where I’ve been, how many times God has drawn close to assure me He is, He knows me intimately, and He’s transforming me. My small group members seemed moved by what I read. But those posts also reminded me of how much, during those prolific and heady days of blogging, I had been preaching to the choir. Not that there’s anything wrong with that—a believer writing to believers is a beautiful and sacred tradition—we are called to encourage our fellow saints.
These days, as I write, I can’t help but picture all my not-yet-believing friends, and wonder if what I write about life and God would make any sense, if my work would draw them to Him…or do the opposite.
I’m not always sure what writing for this audience should look like, or even if I’m doing it right. I often feel as if I’m writing blind as God leads me in this dance: “Put your hand here…now step to the left…step to the right…pivot, and…dip!”
Which is to say, we all have our phases, we all have our times when we are confident and “flowy,” swept along by an effortlessly familiar rhythm. Then, sometimes, God leads us into a new phase of work, a path on this pilgrim journey we weren’t expecting, and we learn to pick up, in stops and starts, a new rhythm.
Whatever writing phase you find yourself in, we at ICW want to encourage you forward. In fact, we hope this group can grow into a community of encouragers, called by our Creator, no matter our season, no matter our rhythm.
Hope to see you all on our next step in this endeavor at our Fall Gathering, Rhythms, October 26, Trinity Fellowship, 9-12:30. Click here to sign up.
