The Writer’s Rendezvous: How to Get the Most From a Writer’s Conference

Idahope Christian Writer’s Conference is on the horizon! All the behind-the-scenes work is about to come to fruition, and we’re so thankful to those dedicated to ICW who put on the conference so we writers can stumble from our caves and socialize for a short time. Even the most hardened writing hermit joins other scribes to fellowship and connect at conferences. I’m glad you’re going to be there with us.

Here are a few tips writers have learned to maximize your conference experience over the years.

Before You Go

  • Have a goal. Know what you want from the conference. Would you like brainstorming help? Do you want feedback on your work? Do you need to know what to do with your manuscript now it’s done? Know what information you’d like to walk away with.
  • Have a short description of your work memorized. Everyone will ask what you are working on.
  • Bring a notebook to write everything down.

When You’re There

  • Bring your energy. Bring enough to see the day through to attend workshops and stay focused.
  • Eat snacks. Drink water and coffee and tea.
  • Be bold. Talk to people. Ask questions. Be open about yourself, including some of your vulnerabilities. You’ll find you’re not alone.
  • Don’t be afraid to take a breather by yourself and recharge. Just take a few moments to collect yourself, and remember that all is okay and that you are with people who love writing almost as much as you. You’ll need a break if you drink as much water, coffee, and tea as I suggested.
  • Connect with people. Network. Make new friends renew acquaintances, and trade tips with experts. Get contact information and friend people on social media as soon as you’ve finished chatting with them.
  • Enjoy worshiping with other believers. We love Christ, and all use words to show His light to the world.

After the Conference

  • Follow up with your new friends.
  • Sleep. Read. Write. Repeat.
  • Positive feedback for the crew at ICW is always welcome.

Writing conferences are an inspiring time for writers. I hope you enjoy Idahope’s conference as much as I will. See you there!

Not all views expressed are those of every member of ICW.
