God’s Love for the Writer and the Chicken
A chicken had a dream. There would be a day when he spread his wings and soared above the earth.
As a middle schooler, I watched a rooster strut around my friend’s farm, pounding his wings. Seeds, dust, and feathers swirled around him. I asked my friend what was up with the crazy rooster.
“He’s trying to fly. The idiot doesn’t even crow in the morning. He tries to fly.”
I admired the effort. So, when the rooster found himself atop the barn in the clutches of my friend’s little brother, I watched with interest. Little boys do things that are usually explicable, so when the kid flung the rooster from four stories high, my only thought was whether the chicken would fly.
For about ten feet, the chicken plummeted like a canon ball. Then, magic happened. He spread his wings and flapped as he’d done many times in the farmyard.
Dust swirled about him, miniature tornadoes. The earth neared.
Thump. The chicken didn’t move for a moment, then lifted his head. He took a few breaths, then managed to lift himself to his drumsticks. He paused and looked up at the four stories; something in his chicken brain must have offered the correct answer. He spread his wings, stretched, lifted his chin, and let out a loud crow. He walked away with a smile on his beak.
He had carried out his dream.
Can you imagine how God sees our writing journey? To Him, are we chickens trying to learn to fly? Will there be a moment when we’re flung from the heights of a barn? What can we do to reach the heights of our dreams?
Proverbs 3:5-6 bears repeating. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
The chicken had no idea that a lifetime of wing-flapping would save his life. He had a dream, and in his tiny little heart, his dream and purpose were accomplished.
We’re given a path, a dream, and we’re to write. The rest is just details. Leave them up to the Lord. He will use our skills if we acknowledge Him in all our ways. Trust Him. He’s got this. You write. Good things will happen.
Go, flap your wings!
