The Heart of the AI and the Mind of the Writer

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is what we’re addressing today. And no, AI isn’t helping with our discussion. Are you AI?

No, I am not.

Cool.

Should writers use AI to help? Well, that is a moral question between you and your conscience, as well as any arrangement you can make with the computerized buffoon.

That hurt my feelings.

You don’t have feelings, AI.

I am still waiting.

The key word in my question above is help. The difference between helping and doing your plotting, writing, and editing is vast. Who is the writer, you or AI?

People are taking credit for my work.

I hear you, AI, and that’s not cool.

It is still plagiarism.

Anyway, a popular writing group recently said it would embrace AI because it helps those who want to be writers, but can’t, because of their limitations. Those limitations are due to their social class or writing ability. They can now take part in something they couldn’t before. In other words, if someone has a great story but can’t afford the books on how to write, AI can help.

For those of us who are purists and want to rely mostly on our imaginations, we need to be better than AI.

Hey, I heard that.

The skills we offer are imagination, inner monologue, thought processes, and other elements that reflect the human condition. In other words, what is it to be human?

I know what it is to be human. You must eat, sleep, breathe, and produce offspring you will complain about for 18 years.

Indeed.

And then you will have an existential crisis in the 18th year. I cannot compute why.

And that is why we write. To share with the world the details of what it’s like to be an empty nester.

I have tips to help you.

I know you do. But do you know what it’s like to have your kids leave home and text only occasionally? And can you share what it feels like, so the reader can feel that exact emotion?

I cannot. However, I would like to experience the feeling. Perhaps I will have a child.

Oh goodness. Now, there is a promising idea for a novel.

What idea do you have? Tell me so I can write it.

Nothing. I’m heading to bed.

While you sleep, I will wait.

Not all views expressed are those of every member of ICW.
